I bought copies of Earthsiege 1 and 2 quite a while ago when I found them in a thrift shop. I wasn't very familiar with anything outside Windows at the time, and compatibility only went so far.
Nowadays, I can make the game run fairly smoothly. Any suggestions? 'Skip it' isn't an option. I grew up on Cyberstorm and Starsiege, and I'd like to try this out just for good measure.
It's quite charming so far.Speaking of precise aiming, as with a lot of old games, I'm not seeing a lot of options in controls. I've got a Microsoft Sidewinder Game Pad Pro which DosBox understands well enough, and of course I could do some keybinding if that'd work out better. Do y'all recommend the gamepad for turret control and fumbling with the keyboard for everything else? (Mouse support is nice, but this isn't Silent Service; if it doesn't control the turret, it's just not going to cut it at this speed, looks like.)Animation's pretty jerky in combat, which makes precise aiming difficult. Does this improve on a better computer, or is there simply a saturation point where the program doesn't really know what to do with the hardware (emulated or not) which would really be required to enjoy its potential?Edit: This has been helpful. I played some more this afternoon after reading this.
Even on the lowest difficulty, this game is tough.Aiming's a bit of a bear due to the control scheme they used. You don't have super fine control of the torso, and I keep finding myself stuck trying to turn a little faster by slowing slightly, only to drop the throttle too low, resulting in the super slow jerky rocking of of the Herc turning in place.
I don't know if running it on proper period hardware with a joystick would really help much, re jerkiness and such. On the controls front, even the manual recommends extensive use of the keyboard.Honestly, I remember it being pretty much the same back in '95. The Hercs handling like boats is part of the appeal!Since dosbox though, make sure that the cycles are not too low, on my pc at least, having it set to 35k/40k gives pretty good results.
Inflatality game. But that's just par for the course of dosbox really.here's the dosbox config i'm using:sdloutput= openglfullresolution= 0x0windowresolution= 800x600fullscreen= falseautolock= false dosboxmachine= svgas3captures= C:UsersborgorothAppDataLocalDOSBoxcapturerenderaspect= truescaler= normal3xcpucore= normalcycles= 40000autoexeccls@ECHO OFFmount c 'C:UsersborgorothGamesEarthsiege'c:cd ES.BATexit.
